Ribbon cuttings are one of the most visible, joyful, and community-focused events a chamber can host. They provide amazing photo opportunities, are easy to promote, and deliver a feel-good moment for new and growing businesses. Plus, everyone loves to see a new business opening. It paints a picture of your community as one that's successful and vibrant. But for some chambers, ribbon cuttings are treated as a free perk, a staff drain, or an afterthought.

And for good reason. They (can) take a lot of work.

Ribbon cuttings don’t just have to be ceremonial. With the right approach, your ribbon cuttings can transform into a profit center for your chamber; something that not only generates revenue but also provides value to the businesses you serve.

Why Ribbon Cuttings Are Undervalued

Most chambers offer ribbon cuttings as a perk of membership, often at no additional cost. The reasoning makes sense: they’re a tangible way to show value to new members. But when handled this way, ribbon cuttings can turn into a loss leader. Staff spend time coordinating, leaders show up, marketing resources get allocated, and yet the chamber earns nothing directly from the effort other than maybe a photo op.

That model leaves money and impact on the table. Businesses see ribbon cuttings as a marketing opportunity. They want visibility, community engagement, and credibility. If you can meet those desires in a structured, premium way, you will elevate the event and create new revenue streams.

Step One: Create a Ribbon Cutting Package

Stop thinking of ribbon cuttings as a single event. Instead, package them as a promotional suite. A strong package might include:

Event Coordination: Scheduling, invitations, press releases, and day-of logistics.

Media Exposure: Photos, video clips, social media posts before, during, and after the event.

Community Engagement: Invitations to elected officials, chamber leaders, and local influencers.

Keepsake Items: Branded ribbon, scissors, and a plaque or certificate.

Now, this package has a clear market value. A business hiring an agency for event coordination, PR, and photography could easily pay hundreds or thousands of dollars. By structuring it as a chamber-led benefit, you provide high-touch service at a competitive price. Plus, once you create the specifics of the package, they can be done very efficiently with an implementation schedule.

Step Two: Introduce Premium Options

While you might offer a basic ribbon cutting as a free member perk, introduce premium upgrades to turn it into a profit center. Examples include:

Photography/Videography Add-Ons: Offer professional photo packages, live-streaming, or short highlight reels for an additional fee.

Branded Souvenirs: Sell commemorative plaques, photo books, or framed ribbon sections.

Custom Marketing Boosts: Charge for boosted social posts, featured newsletter spots, an interview, and/or dedicated blog write-ups.

Event Enhancements: Offer rentals (balloons, sound systems, step-and-repeat backdrops) as optional upgrades.

VIP Experience: Provide private pre-event networking with elected officials or chamber leaders for a sponsorship fee.

By layering these options, you allow businesses to choose how much visibility and impact they want, and you create scalable revenue.

Step Three: Monetize Sponsorships

Ribbon cuttings don’t just have to be funded by the business hosting them. Surrounding businesses or service providers can also benefit by attaching their name to the event with sponsorships. Consider:

Ribbon Cutting Series Sponsor: A local bank or utility company could underwrite all ribbon cuttings for the year, with their logo appearing on scissors, ribbons, or social posts.

Ribbon Sponsor: a promotional marketing company may sponsor the ribbon if you allow them to put their logo on it with the new business' logo.

Photography Sponsor: A photographer could sponsor and in return receive branding on all ribbon cutting albums or printed picture.

Welcome Kit Sponsor: A business could provide branded folders or gifts given to each ribbon cutting participant.

These sponsorships turn small events into a steady revenue stream and create recurring partnerships.

Step Four: Charge Nonmembers

Nonmembers may still want the visibility of a ribbon cutting. You can make this possible but do so at a premium. Offering ribbon cuttings to nonmembers at a fee significantly higher than membership dues accomplishes two things: it generates revenue, and it highlights the value of membership. Often, the nonmember rate can be paired with a discounted membership offer: "For $750 you can host a ribbon cutting, or for $1,000 you can join the chamber and have this, and all member benefits included."

Step Five: Track and Report ROI

Businesses are more willing to invest in ribbon cutting packages when they see measurable impact. Provide them with a post-event report that includes:

  • Event attendance
  • Quotes or testimonials from attendees
  • Media coverage
  • Social media reach and engagement

This positions the chamber as a results-driven partner rather than just an event host. It also creates a compelling case for upgrades, renewals, or membership if they are not already members. Plus, you have those numbers for new businesses considering ribbon cutting packages in the future.

Step Six: Leverage Ribbon Cuttings as Content

Ribbon cuttings are natural storytelling opportunities. Each one offers photos, videos, and human-interest angles you can repurpose for chamber marketing. That content serves the business and elevates the chamber’s visibility, making future ribbon cuttings even more desirable. This content loop increases the perceived value of the event, justifying the price tag.

Pro tip: when creating posts and content about the event, make sure you include all the information that would allow an interested person to become a customer. Not everyone in town is plugged into the new business openings and your post might be the first they've heard of it. Naming the business isn’t enough. Give their address, hours, and other pertinent information just in case someone is looking at the post and wants to check the new business out. Don’t rely on them to Google it to find out where it’s located, let them know. You'll be helping the new business draw in more customers.

The secret to turning ribbon cuttings into a profit center is balancing revenue with value. Businesses are willing to pay when they know they’ll receive visibility, credibility, and community connection they couldn’t get on their own. By elevating the experience through packages, upgrades, sponsorships, and data reporting, chambers can transform ribbon cuttings from freebies into one of their most profitable and popular services.

Ribbon cuttings will always be about celebration. But for savvy chambers, they can also be about sustainability, funding your mission while helping businesses shine at one of their most important milestones.
