Here we are. A new year! And at the beginning of every year there’s a drive to start something different, be better, and innovate in a way that seems much more pressing than other times of the year.
Most of us want to start off the year with a bang and bold announcement. But if you’re like most chamber pros, there are so many things you want to do that you can’t decide which to focus on.
Yes, there’s a strategic plan for that, but even with the strategic plan, how do you focus enough on something to make headway?
And you HAVE TO focus, even if you want to do “all the things.” Focus is essential to success.
Imagine going to the gym every day and working out for two hours. Whew, right? But it’s not the time you put in as much as what you focus on. For instance, if you did 10 reps for your biceps, 10 reps for your glutes, 10 reps for your shoulders, 10 reps for your calves…you see where we’re going with this? You could be busy for two straight hours isolating each muscle, and might be exhausted at the end, but if you only do that workout once a week, you’re never going to see results.
On the other hand, if you isolate one area of the body and do fifteen minutes of work on that every day, while you may be spending around the same time per week on your workouts in the previous example, you’ll notice greater results with consistency than random spurts of activity.
So it is with your chamber work. If you attack it all on day one, and don’t get back to doing anything else on those projects for 25 days, you won’t see the type of results you want.
Yet if you focus on 1-2 areas in the first quarter, you can move the needle and make some traction.
With that in mind, let’s look at the things that you can be concentrating your efforts on for the best results in the new year (or any other time of year).
First, let’s focus on you.
Consistency is key to successful implementation. When it comes to professional development, you want to learn new skills, implement them, and make them a part of your routine. If you don’t do the latter, they likely won’t stick, and you’ll quickly forget the learning. That’s why many people either choose 2-3 new skills to learn over the course of the year or if they want to learn more than that, they choose a new one for every new month.
If you don’t have any ideas in mind, here are a few things that innovative chamber learners should be embracing as part of their professional development this year:
An innovative chamber leader in 2025 needs to be a multifaceted professional, capable of navigating a rapidly changing environment while effectively serving members.
Here are key professional development skills to prioritize but, again, you can’t do them all:
Strategic Foresight. Go beyond reacting to current trends. Analyze emerging technologies, economic shifts, and societal changes to anticipate future challenges and opportunities for your members. Note: this is going to require time (or the help of an advanced AI).
Innovation Mindset. Embrace new technologies to improve chamber operations, member services, and community engagement. Explore AI-powered tools, virtual reality applications, and data-driven decision-making.
Data Analysis. Use AI to gather, analyze, and interpret data to understand member needs, track program effectiveness, and advocate for data-driven policies.
Digital Marketing Mastery. Leverage digital channels (website, social media, email marketing) to reach a wider audience, engage members, and promote chamber initiatives.
Achieve Video Confidence. Whether social media platforms are acknowledging it or not, video is outperforming non-video posts. People want multi-sensory experiences, and video does that better than straight text or images. It may take a little getting used to but sharing your world through video will deepen your relationship with your followers and help you obtain new ones.
Agile Leadership. Learn to embrace change, adapt quickly to new situations, and foster a culture of flexibility and innovation within the chamber.
Collaborative Partnerships. Build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders (businesses, government, educational institutions, community organizations) to address complex challenges and achieve shared goals.
Inclusive Leadership. Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members, promoting diversity, equity, and belonging.
Community Focus. Facilitate meaningful connections between members, foster a strong sense of community, and actively engage in local initiatives that enhance quality of life.
Growth Mindset. Embrace lifelong learning, seek out new knowledge and skills, and encourage a culture of continuous improvement within the chamber team.
Knowledge Prioritization. Facilitate peer learning, mentorship programs, and professional development opportunities for chamber staff and members.
When it comes to building bridges and championing causes, some of the top needs for most chambers focus on things like:
Undertaking Targeted Advocacy
Become a powerful voice for your members on critical issues that matter to them such as workforce development, zoning regulations, and championing business-friendly policies. Build relationships with local and state officials, participate in public hearings, and leverage online advocacy tools.
Developing Workforce Development Expertise
Position your chamber as a leader in addressing the skills gap and connecting businesses with qualified talent. Collaborate with educational institutions, workforce development boards, and industry experts to develop targeted training programs.
Focusing on Membership Retention & Value Enhancement
Demonstrate the tangible benefits of chamber membership beyond networking events. Offer exclusive resources, workshops, and opportunities that address pressing member needs like recruitment, cost management, and navigating economic uncertainty.
To find out if these issues match the top concerns of your community and thus should be something you focus on in the new year, create and distribute a member survey.
For the chamber pro who wants to look ahead, consider some of these trends to shape your offerings:
Whether your 2025 goals are to grow as a leader, assist your members in realizing value, or embrace trends, by minimizing the number of tactics you take on at your chamber, and perform those consistently, you can effectively address the challenges of 2025, deliver exceptional value to your members, and play a pivotal role in driving economic growth and community prosperity.
Happy New Year!
